Christian Aid Cycle Ride
This year, the parishioners of St Matthew's, St Sidwell's and St Mark's in Exeter are marking Christian Aid week in an unusual way.

Three members of the preaching team in the parishes, the rector Simon Croft and two of the readers, Tina and David Smith, are cycling across Devon in a two-day sponsored ride, on 16th & 17th May. On their way, they plan to stop and pray at the churches they pass o... More >

Dear friends,
I am delighted to tell you about a very special theatre performance coming to the Desmond Tutu Centre in Plymouth:
Born in Bethlehem
Performed by Al-Harah Theatre of the West Bank
Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd May 2008
The Desmond Tutu Centre, UCP Marjon
7.30 p.m.
We are thrilled to welcome our West Bank partners Al-Harah Theatre to Plymouth. Over the course of the last four years I have been privileged to visit Marina Barham and her colleagues in Beit Jala and enjoyed wonderful and warm hospitality. Their current show has been touring widely as far afield as Japan and Italy and thanks to producer Milan Govaderica and Red Ladder Theatre in Leeds, Al-Harah are visiting the UK.
It’s not easy being a tour guide in Bethlehem these days. Especially when your tour involves two actors who won’t quite stick to the script of the first Christmas… But two thousand years on, in a town isolated and divided by walls and watchtowers, is it any wonder that his actors are asking, what would the nativity be like if it happened today?

Spirited, funny and profoundly moving, Born in Bethlehem tells the story of the Holy Land, past and present. The story of a little town which, despite all the charming Christmas cards, the checkpoints and curfews, is home to thousands of real people living very real lives.
We are able to offer seats for this production at £5.00 for adults and £3.50 concessions. The performance is in English and lasts approximately one hour. It is suitable for young people aged 14 and over and adults. Tickets are available from Lesley Alcock at UCP Marjon on 01752 636700 ext 5641 or please email lalcock@marjon.ac.uk.
We really hope you can take advantage of this unique opportunity and we look forward to hearing from you. Do please pass this information on through your own mailing lists.
Best wishes,

David Oddie

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND’S HIGHER EDUCATION STRATEGY: IMPLEMENTING AIMING HIGHER

Over the summer the Church of England Board of Education has published its Higher Education Strategy, setting out its intentions – with timescales – for work in HE over the next five years. This is a significant piece of work, and the result of a process in which chaplains, the National Exec, the HE Panel of the Board and the Board itself have all participated.

Copies were sent first to all members of the General Synod, and to all Bishops, and then, in the last week, to all Anglican chaplains. We will shortly be sending it to DDEs and other interested parties. Please read it, and respond in due course to invitations to engage with the various elements of it.

If there are particular areas of the strategy in which would particularly like to participate, please e-mail hugh.shilson-thomas@c-of-e.org.uk to register your interest.

The Strategy is a Church of England strategy, but as it makes very clear, wherever we are able to work together ecumenically to achieve its aims we are committed to doing so. Do share the document as appropriate, and note that further copies can be obtained from Church House Bookshop or the whole publication is available on line at
